Chihuahua, Mexico /LWWPress/August 10, 2011 – –Dr. Jorge A. Alvarez Diaz, educator and recipient of the Manuel Velasco-Suárez Award in Bioethics, was selected for inclusion in the forthcoming 2011 edition of The Latino Who’s Who.
Dr. Alvarez Diaz is a Mexican physician who works in several fields; one of them is clinical sexology. Having completed courses at Akamai University to obtain his Master of Sciences in Human Sexuality, he became the first health professional in Chihuahua with this kind of postgraduate degree (revalidated by the Mexican government through the Ministry of Education) and certified as a Physician Specialist in Clinical Sexology by the FLASSES (Latin American Federation of Societies of Sexology and Sex Education).
He was the recipient of the Manuel Velasco-Suárez Award at the Pan American Sanitary Conference for his proposed study to develop an analysis of the attitudes of Latin American couples seeking reproductive services and the preservation of human embryos. Dr. Alvarez seeks to develop a plan to create bioethics committees in those Latin American countries that preserve embryos and report their work to the Latin American Network of Assisted Reproduction.
The Manuel Velasco-Suárez Award in Bioethics encourages young researchers to develop their capacities for bioethical analysis, and was created in 2002 by the Ministry of Health in Mexico and PAHEF in cooperation with PAHO. This award honors the memory of Dr. Manuel Velasco Suarez, Mexico, who was a pioneer in the field of bioethics in Latin America.
