After 15 years at Boler, he began selling cabbage, Bell peppers and tomatoes to Britt McCullough Produce, Mel Renfro Foods and Van De Walla, and was doing direct store delivery to H.E.B. stores throughout Texas.

Using the extensive experience and knowledge he acquired through these jobs, Robert Ruiz Sr. opened Robert Ruiz Inc. in 1963 and was joined in the business by his sons Robert Jr., Richard and Eddie.  Together, they grew the company into one of the leading grower-shipper-packers in North America.

Through honesty, integrity, hard work, dedication, and trust in God, Robert Ruiz Sr. was able to overcome the harsh discrimination that existed against Hispanics during that time, and establish a company that flourished, even when many other grower-shipper-packinghouses were going out of business at that time.  With the labor and business that Robert Ruiz Sr. brought to an area, he always left an area better and richer than it had been when he arrived.

Robert Ruiz Sr. created an opportunity for Hispanic-Americans that did not exist at the time, and made the idea of Hispanic-owned companies more acceptable during a time when Hispanic-owned companies did not exist in the agricultural industry.  Mr. Richard Ruiz proudly continues the tradition of excellence, integrity, and faith that was set by his father, now has a highly rated, highly regarded company, which is also 100% Hispanic owned and operated.

Mr. Richard Ruiz also attributes his success to Mrs. Laura S. Ruiz.  Mrs. Laura S Ruiz is Vice-President of Ruiz Sales and wife of 43 years and full supporter of Mr. Richard Ruiz and his business career, even through the hard times, has been the backbone of the company, and a major stepping-stone to success and excellence, playing a major role as the account manager for the corporation.  Together, they have three daughters.  Mrs. Lori Ann Nisimblat, Mrs. Erica Marie Espinoza, Mrs. Jessica Nicole Armstrong.  Mrs. Nisimblat also continues the family tradition be being on the board of directors of Ruiz Sales, and serving as Director of Operations.  She is also responsible for the introduction and mass acceptance of Mexico Ataulfo variety mangoes into the Florida retailer’s market.

Mr. Ruiz is a member of the Trinity Worship Center and attended Pan American College, now known as the University of Texas at Pan Am.

Today, Mr. Richard Ruiz continues the legacy set forth by his father, and strives to advance the cause of all Hispanics, and be a role-model to Hispanics everywhere.  His company is at the forefront of the PTI and Traceability movement, and he is one of the few people in the Produce Industry who can provide item-level traceability for his Persian Lime product, which lets both retailers and consumers trace their fruit back through the supply chain to the fruit’s origin point.  Mr. Ruiz believes in the importance of the Hispanic community as future leaders in American business, politics, and social change, and his company strives to be the best at not only being a profitable and well-renowned Hispanic company, but also supplying other Americans, especially the moms and kids, with their safe food needs.
